Here's the honest version, which is not the version the American brands tell you.
In Australia, a plumber does the water connection
Anything that connects to the mains water supply legally requires a licensed plumber in every Australian state and territory. That includes bidet seats. It's not a recommendation, it's plumbing law, and doing it yourself can void your home insurance and your product warranty.
Tushy and the other US brands sell a ten-minute DIY install because that's legal where they are. It isn't here. We'd rather be straight with you before you order than have you discover it on the box.
What it actually involves
It's a small job. A plumber fits a T-valve to your existing cistern inlet, runs a braided hose to the seat, mounts the seat on the standard bolt holes and tests it. Most are done in under an hour.
For the Bondi (non-electric)
- Plumber, roughly one hour
- No electrical work at all
- No power point required
For the Byron (electric)
- Plumber, roughly one hour
- A standard 240V power point within about 1.2m of the toilet
- If there's no power point in your bathroom, an electrician will need to add one — worth checking before you order
For the Go (portable)
- Fill it with water
- There is no step two
Renting?
Both seats come off as easily as they go on. Keep your original seat somewhere safe, take the Cheeky with you when you move, and put the old one back before the final inspection. Check your lease before any plumbing work — most landlords are fine with it, but ask.
